You can’t have a different life without change.
What happens when you actively plan for your future?
The International Coaching Federation just released the Futures Report. It looks at where the world and coaching might go in the next ten years. But, a pot of strong coffee and a copy of the report got me thinking…and typing.
What's possible in 10 years? That would put us in the tail end of the year 2036. It stirred up conversations I’ve had with several clients over the last few months. They each had different timelines, a variety of of starting points, and current life situations, each one had vastly different answers to the same basic question, “what do I want to be?”
Before you read on, take a moment, and just think about the possibilities.
“What do you want your life to be in 10 years?”
How can I find direction and focus with my life?
It’s easy to feel unsure of where to start or overwhelmed by the prospect of change. But, you can’t continue doing everything the same and hope for a different future. Repetition doesn’t lead to change, it just makes you more efficient at what you’re already doing.
What came to mind as you thought about your life in 2036? Did you have something jump out? Was there a bit of panic? It’s a tough question and honestly few of us are good at forming a response.
It’s a little unfair too, because we’ve been taught to plan our futures all wrong.
We were taught to start with a long list of tasks, goals, timelines, milestones…check these things off your list and you’ll have the future you want!
Often the list came with expectations or non-negotiable items that family, friends, society, or your culture background assumed had to be in the mix.
Very little focus was ever put on the outcome, the “why” behind all the work you’re doing.
That’s where it unravels, without understanding the ultimate motivation and goal all we’re doing is filling today and tomorrow with actions that don’t build towards something or lead anywhere.
But, because you’ve filled so much time with actions and done all the things everyone said you should it feels like you should make progress.
The old system sucks, so lets look at it differently.
In the next post we’re going to burn down the old script and Look at your life like a roadtrip, not a performance metric.
So take a beat, put down the jumbo size bag of chips, stop fighting about who’s ridding shotgun, and don’t start packing random crap.
We need to decide where we’re going first!
